PARTYING IN ABER: WHY NOT AND MORE
Hello once again everyone! In today's post, I am going to talk to you about places to go out partying in Aberystwyth. As you know, it is a small city (at that size, I don't even know if you can call it a "city"), so there are not too many hidden sites. The good thing about this is that there is always a great vibe in all the places. Let's go!
Firstly, I have to say that timings for going out in the United Kingdom (and in general in the rest of Europe, to be honest) are very different to those in Spain. They start to drink at 10pm (sometimes even before that, depending on what day it is) and at around midnight they go to the club; the clubs usually open at about 10.30pm, to give you an idea. But well, at that time they are dead. As for what time people go home, they are usually home before 4am, even though there are also people who stay out, or nights that go on till 6 or 8am. Different strokes for different folks. I usually get up and go to sleep quite early, so for me, these kinds of timings are better. The next morning I get up normally and I can have a productive day.
Secondly, I have to talk about WHY NOT. Just for your information, before it was called Yokos and there are students who still call it that. It is one of the most popular places. It is next to Starbucks, in the corner of a small square. There is not a big sign so that you can see it from far away nor anything that stands out about it, but in the evening the queue of students who want to go in extends all the way to the end of the street.
The good thing about this place is that it is really cheap. They have the classic offers: if you get there before 2am, roughly, there will be a discount, for example. There were days that I got in for free and in the case that that night it would cost £3 to get in, for example, with your Aberystwyth student card you'll get discounted entry and you will only have to pay £1. It is cheap. Oh, the drinks, and everything else there is also cheap and they usually have deals.
Once you are inside, there is a famous dancefloor, a bar which serves drinks and a sofa area to sit down at, if you "go out for a chilled one. " As for the music, it is very different to how it is in Spain, however I don't think this is an Aberystwyth thing but rather the case for the whole of the United Kingdom. They are a bit behind on what they think "club music" is. When we went, they were still listening to "Danza Kuduro" and "Gasolina", so you can see what I mean. As for electronic music, they are songs with hardly any drops (forgive my lack of DJ-esque vocabulary), most of which sound exactly the same as how they do on the radio, without any edits... One night they even played "Love Story" by Taylor Swift! The worst song ever and I think it is the last thing that you need when you are trying to get hyped. However, die-hard fans for her such as me were buzzing when it came on.
To get back to the halls (the same way that we did to get to the city in the first place) we always got a taxi which was always there ready and waiting in front of Why Not. They know. They are cheap and split between four of us, it worked out at £1 each. So, going on a night out in Aberystwyth is really cheap, there were nights where I didn't even end up spending £3. I always compared it with a friend who was on Erasmus in a big city, where going out wasn't possible unless you had at least £30 to spare. What a disaster.
Here are some photos that the club puts up after each night out.

There is also another pub called THE ACADEMY. Look out though, it isn't a club. It is a really big pub with several pool tables, a TV, sofas, very casino-like stairs and it is usually quite popular... although saying that, it is quite a chilled place. It is a lot bigger than Why Not and you can see the front of it from ages away. The drinks are quite expensive, but they are not the classic rum and cokes. They are more like cocktails. So, if you want to get really drunk, don't drink cocktails. There are also shots and normal spirit-mixer drinks, but people don't buy them as they aren't good value for money.
After, there is also a place called ROYAL PIER. It looks like a casino. It is by the bay, decorated with yellow lights and.. They give a bit of life to Aber during the evening. It is similar to Why Not, it also has a sofa area, a dance floor, etc. But the decoration is more "sophisticated. " Also, people of all kinds of ages usually go to Royal Pier, from age 20 to 50 roughly, depending on what day it is. But Why Not is a lot more popular with university students.
I also have to talk about the typical English pubs. London is full of them, but in Aber there is a brand called White Horse. They are very well-known, they all look the same. What makes them different from other pubs is that they are smaller and they are usually busy from about 8pm to have a couple of beers or tinnies. People with jobs usually go there after finishing work, so they are busiest from 6 to 8pm.
And that will be everything for today's post! I am sure that there are more places in Aberystwyth to go out partying or for a drink, you can check them out when you go there. If you have any questions or comments, don't hesitate to ask. Thank you to everyone once again for reading and I will see you in the next post.
