The Heart Of Wuerzburg

Published by flag-gb Rebecca Higgins — 9 years ago

Der Festung or The Fortress in England is one of the most beautiful sights in Wuerzburg and it somewhat overshadowed by the Residence in Wuerzburg (although this too is a beautiful piece of arcitecture). The scene is set perfectly as the fortress sits high up on the hill side and can be seen from many places in the city. It takes you out of the twenty-first century and enables you to appreciate the history of such a classic, traditional city just by looking at it. Inside, there is a "Prince's Building Museum" and within this, there are many valuable items of furniture, tapestries and paintings, that are perfect to view by an art lover, or an historian. I myself, being neither of these, even found appreciation for these elegant features of the fortress. What was particularly wonderful to learn about was the history of the fortress and city of Wuerzburg in the Main-Franconian Museum within the fortress. I had been studying here for 3 weeks before I even really knew anything about it. It really hit home when I read about the city being almost completely distroyed in the Second World War and the effort to which people went to recreate their home. I didn't spend much time in either of these two places, however, there is also a gorgeous garden ("Prince's Garden") and a small chapel for church services and religious events. The only thing that was a problem with the fortress, was that I found it hard to know how to get there. There was some research into getting but it was certainly worth finding. It really is a beautiful place to visit, and really captures the essence of Wuerzburg through time.

Attached are some of the best pictures from the internet, I'm not a fantastic photographer and wanted to do the fortress justice.
