Autumn vibes in Great Malvern
Many people complain about the autumn season in the UK, as it is one of the worst time of the year, when you may feel depressed and low. I hear frequently such expressions as ''flood again'' (in Worcester definitely), ''freezing cold'', ''rainy days'', ''miserable atmosphere'', which make me feel even more negative. However, if the person is planning to visit new places around the UK or go on a trip hiking in autumn, is the nature really ''so angry''? Is that always the case or a stereotype of grey and miserable autumn in the UK? In this article, I will share my experience of one day trip to the most beautiful town in Worcestershire - Great Malvern. In this way, I hope to prove that you can enjoy autumn vibes.
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
As an international student living in Worcester for years, I would say that British weather is unpredictable, that's why you need to use your chance. Have you seen sunlight? Perfect, then take your bag, camera and go to the train station! One beautiful sunny morning at the beginning of November we decided to go to Great Malvern, a spa town in Worcestershire. Not many people know, but this place is surrounded by Malvern Hills, that are included in the list of Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This indicates, that Malvern Hills has a high value and this magnificent landmark created by nature has been recognised. Although I've been here, I wanted to admire its beauty in autumn colours.
The best and easiest way to get to Great Malvern is by train. Price ticket is usually about £4 (return ticket included) for students and £6 for adults. In 15 min we passed Worcester Foregate Station, Malvern Link and arrived at Great Malvern. I couldn't stop gazing at such gorgeous parks, hills and leaves, all covered in golden autumn colours. We saw the hills and headed to the top, following the pathway created by colourful parts of autumn presence.
Great Malvern as a Victorian town
In the town centre, you can see many little shops in Church Street, bookshops, cades, art galleries, charity shops and others in its unique style, reminded of Victorian times. Even the railway station is built in Victorian style, which gives this place such an authentic element presenting British history and architecture. For those who like long walks and hiking, I would recommend exploring the town and stop for a coffee or chai latte with a piece of pumpkin cake at Abbey Road Tea and Coffee shop. This can be a refreshment break to get more energy for next hour hiking on the top of the world. Although this time we had delicious homebaked pumpkin cake, that allowed us to absorb even more flavours of magnificent autumn.
When you have a goal, a dream, all universe will help you to reach it. Those, who like hiking and mountains, will know, how important is to be persistent, prepared and follow directions. After a long way, we reached the top of the hill, where we had most stunning view I would compare to the favourite piece of music, that makes you cry. In my case this way my ''Nuvole Bianche'' by Ludovico Einaudi. Moreover, as this was my 4th time on the top, I experienced it as it would have been first. Now I can strongly say, that id doesn't matter which time of the year you plan your trip to Malvern - it will always surprise you. As it surprised me today.
For those who like theatre
Last time my aim of the journey was a theatre performance at Malvern Theatres, Winter Gardens. My Czech friend suggested going on ''Sherlock Holmes'' performance, which I enjoyed a lot due to outstanding talents of actors, live music in the background and such a brilliant way of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's tale adaptation. Tickets for this performance were reasonably cheap - less than £10, and the experience of 2 h gives you another perspective on life.
Unfortunately, the day has just 24h and in the evening we came back with warm memories and photos, that will remind us, that such trips are essential for humans to get new insights, challenge yourself and fulfil the natural curiosity of a child we all have inside us. As I'm always looking for new places to visit, I would come back to Malvern Hills next time, as this ''little Switzerland'' is always changing the melody as Antonio Vivaldi's four seasons. Which season of Great Malvern experience is your favourite? Clearly, I would prefer catching this autumn vibe with a cup of hot chocolate in my hand, feeling cosy and admiring the view of stunning Malvern Hills covered in the palette of golden-amber leaves. Are you now ready for one day trip in autumn?
