10 Things to do In Worcester
Everything happens for a reason. Each day brings us a new story to ‘’play’’ on the life stage. Different challenges and lessons become part of us, encouraging each of us to take a new step. Who knows, maybe this time I will have more courage? More wisdom? More rational thinking?
When I was choosing between the University of Westminster and the University of Worcester one of the most crucial factors was the place. Do I want to live in London? – I asked myself and felt so depressed planning the future in the fast-paced city with millions of people. And then I thought about Worcester…
I made my research, as I had no idea where it is and how it looks like. In the first second when I saw the photos online, I got that feeling of excitement and joy – this is my dream place! Soon, after 6 months from the day I decided to apply to Worcester University, I landed in this natural beauty masterpiece. And today without no doubts Worcester is my special place of personal growth, friendships, and creative big life projects.
Worcester as a city
Worcester is a cathedral city 30 miles from Birmingham. It is a small city with 100 000 people with the majority of students from different countries. Worcester is famous for these several things:
1) It is a home of Royal Worcester Porcelain
2) Edward Elgar, a famous British composer, was born in Worcester
3) Worcester sauce
4) Worcester University
If you are interested in history and geography, I would suggest reading more online and do your own research, while I will share with you my story and tips on how to make most of your time in Worcester.
1. Visit Worcester Cathedral
2. Visit Commandery – the historical place with 800-year-old history: English Civil War, Battle of Worcester 1651 and interactive exhibition.
3. Go for a walk along the canal in Diglis – Little Venice
4. Try the best coffee in the city at Columbiana Francini (Check my article Francini Columbiana – where the soul want to start dancing in a rhythm of salsa)
5. Go to Great Malvern Hills
6. Try the best chocolate brownie from the Boston Tea Party or Be the Change (vegan)
7. Visit Gheluvelt Park
8. Visit Tudor House Museum
9. Visit the Infirmary and George Medical Museum at City Campus (Infirmary Walk, Castle Street, Worcester WR1 3AS)
10. Enjoy the sunset from the top of Fort Royal Park
Usually, the climate is moderate – it is warm in the summer and not too cold in winter. However, 2 years ago I was lucky to see the snow I for 1 week! Moreover, I was so surprised, when university lectures were canceled due to snow and weather conditions…
One of the most important places and tourist destinations in Worcester Cathedral. Every year student graduation ceremony takes place in this medieval gothic style cathedral. However, if you are interested in history and admire architectural artwork, I would suggest visiting the cathedral and climbing the Tower! You can check opening times, as it is usually a weekend 11-5 pm. The price is £5 and the experience – worth millions! For the first time when I came to Worcester, I heard so many people telling me to climb the tower, thus one sunny day I decided to climb high! After an intense climbing through a steep pathway similar to those in the castles, I got the top! The view was gorgeous, especially with that calm feeling of freedom and a sentiment to the Sabrina Bridge, that you cross every day, beautiful parks, when you walk with the friends and the University of Worcester, that brought me to this magical place I call my home today.
PS. Worcester Cathedral is opened every day till 6 pm and the entrance is free. If you want to go for a guided tour, you may check the worcestercathedral.co.uk.
