What is it like to live in Villach? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

The city is very quiet. You cannot see people on the streets after 10 p. m. It is a very small city with beautiful views and landscapes. Surrounded by mountains, gives many opportunities to go skiing/snowboarding.

What is the student lifestyle like in Villach?

It depends on the program, but Carinthia University of Applied Sciences requires a lot of work and commitment from its students. There are 24 hour projects and classes until even 10 p. m.

How much does it cost to live in Villach?

Not much, in comparison to other bigger European cities. A whole flat can be rented for 500 EUR. Usually students rent flats, because for a room in dormitory cost approx. 350 EUR, that is why it is better to pay a bit more and have the whole flat.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Villach? Is there any advice you can give?

Well, there are many flats to rent and it does not take much time. The best option is to look through willhaben webpage or find an agent who can help.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Austria has a very good food. Austrian cuisine is characterized by essential soups and big portions of meat. Villach is especially good place because of the location: 30 km to Italy, where you can eat delicious Italian food. Also in the city there are many places with very good Italian cuisine.

What places would you recommend visiting in Villach?

There are many tourist attractions outside but very close to Villach, but in the city there are many beautiful lakes, that are perfect during summer. For winter, there are minimum 3 mountains very well prepared for the skiing season. Definitely it is worth to go to Silbersee, Gerlitzen mountain and Tarvisio (Italy).

Is it good to eat out in Villach? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

There are very nice restaurants with Chinese food buffet where you pay once approx. 10 EUR and eat as much as you want. The best restaurant with Austrian food is Fruhmann. For Italian cuisine I recommend Hotel Trieste in Tarvisio.

Is the nightlife good in Villach? Where is good to go?

Villach is not a good destination for party people. Usually students are organizing party at one dormitory. There is one club and small club/cafes in the city center but they are very small. However, the nightlife is not really "exciting".

What advice would you give future students heading to Villach?

Be prepared for a lot of work for the University, but the quality of courses are very high. People here are very friendly, open and helpful. There is not a lot of party places but if you find some party people you will always have something to do. It is a perfect destination for people that love sport activities and enjoy nature.
