Experience in Victoria, Canada by Fraser
What is it like to live in Victoria? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Victoria is a beautiful city to live in, there is nothing that is ever very far away. The public transit is a bus system that runs very regularly, and you can get virtually anywhere you like with only a transfer or two. In addition, depending on the area of town, it is not uncommon to see animals such as deer and rabbits. I would highly recommend living in Victoria.
What is the student lifestyle like in Victoria?
The lifestyle is pretty laid back, there are lots of things to do in/around campus.
How much does it cost to live in Victoria?
The price for rent can vary quite widely depending on where you live, you can find places to live anywhere from $300-$1200 a month quite easily. Food prices are about average to the rest of Canada.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Victoria? Is there any advice you can give?
It isn't very difficult to find accommodations, there are several websites that you can search through. The University of Victoria runs a very nice one, I recommend starting there.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is (much like the rest of Canada) quite diverse, you would be able to find just about anything you want; this includes both restaurants and speciality markets.
What places would you recommend visiting in Victoria?
The Royal B. C. Museum, the B. C. Legislature, Craigdarroch castle, the harbour down town, take in a whale watching tour.
Is it good to eat out in Victoria? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
There are many excellent places to eat out in Victoria, many of which are down town, several are around the University. Some of my personal favourites are Cactus Club and Irish Times.
Is the nightlife good in Victoria? Where is good to go?
There are many, many places down town that you can go; too many to list really. Irish Times, Garrick's Head Pub, Bard & Banker, Club 9one9 and Felicita's (the University of Victoria student's pub) are all very popular places; however, different people enjoy different things but you should be able to find something you enjoy.
What advice would you give future students heading to Victoria?
Make sure you have housing nailed down first, then figure out the transit system (if you are a UVic student, bus passes are tied to your student card) as you will likely be using the buses regularly.
