Experience in University of Maastricht, Netherlands by Marine
Generally, what is University of Maastricht like?
The University is spread over the whole town of Maastricht. Each faculty has its different student associations, courses, facilities and activities. In general the courses are in English and very well organized. The University has many nationalities which makes class discussions very interesting. Courses are set in PBL style: Problem-Based-Learning, with small (max 12 ppl. ) groups and case-studies to help you apply and understand the theory better. The University of Maastricht requests a lot of work but it's worth it. Students love the University, its beautiful facilities and challenging opportunities.
What are the facilities like?
All faculties are modern in old buildings. Mine was in an old monastry: beauftiful! The library is also very nice. In general everything has been thought of food shops, cafeteria, libraries, computer rooms, silent rooms, meeting rooms, etc.
What are the tutors like?
Tutors are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable; never arrogant or useless. They encourage group discussions, personal motivation and student-to-student teaching (collaboration).
Are the lessons easy in University of Maastricht?
There are different levels of courses but in general UM is known to request hard work, a lot of reading (thus time) and high quality results.
Does the University organise activities? If so, what are they like?
Yes, many events are organized for the university students or for each faculty individually. In my faculty we had different committees each organizing its own event: dance, theatre, art and photography, chess, music, band, party, sport, politics, film,... In general there is always something cultural, sportive or fun happening in Maastricht.
Do you think there is a good quality of teaching?
Yes, extremely innovative and high quality teaching.
Are there any stories you can share?
So many, but it's time to study for me!
