Experience in Cantabria University, Spain

What do you think of Cantabria University in general?

Cantabria University has a small campus, as Santander itself isn't a very big city, but it is very pretty. However, despite the campus being small, the faculties are very good, some carry great prestige. I can't say much about the humanities, but the sciences are excellent, especially Medicine.

How are the facilities?

The science faculty's facilities are more than sufficient, especially those for Medicine. In addition, the Valdecilla hospital is very very good.

The Medicine college building isn't modern, but parts of it have been recently refurbished. But the labs are fully equipped with good machines, and the classrooms with the necessary tech. You can look up anything in the library which has a large collection of books, both in Spanish and English, or use the group work rooms... there's also a study room which is open from early to late.

You can find the Paraninfo library in the city centre which is an extension of the university, and it can only be used by UC students. It has individual spaces for more focused study sessions, group rooms and extended opening hours during exam periods, allowing students to study there from late at night to very early in the morning.

And the teaching staff?

The teachers are generally very well-educated. There are lots of researchers, and some are published in prestigious journals, etc.

Truthfully, the professor-student relationship isn't always very close, but its almost impossible there being so many students. The classes are smaller with other degrees, such as Maths and Physics, so this relationship may be different. However, the groups for practicals are smaller.

Is it easy to pass the course at Cantabria University?

I can only talk about the faculty of Medicine, and it depends on the module. There are some really difficult subjects, like Physiopathology II, in the third year. If I was an Erasmus student I would not want to take this module.

Still, there are many others that are realistically easy to study and get good grades. The majority of them, anyway.

What did you think of the events organised by the university?

I didn't really participate in many, but there are quite a few. Every week there were lectures on many topics, there were film screenings followed by discussion and debate, many different competitions for writing, drawing, photography, etc. There were also frequent festive events, like university parties, and gyms on campus and in the city.

Is the education of good quality?

I would say absolutely yes with regards to Medicine, it is of a very high level. I can't comment on the other faculties.
