Although Umea was founded in the early 1620’s, if you walk through its streets you won’t find any old building. You can not compare Umea with other Erasmus destinations in this sense. Therefore, Umea is not best known by its touristic places, although it can offer many other thinks. But, to what is due this lack of history in the streets? If we look briefly to its history we will realize or the cause easily. Several high fires have burnt the city along the history. In 1714 and 1720 Russian troops burned this city to the ground. In 1888 the eastern part of the city was completely burnt again due to a fires that started in a brewery. In this fire, over 2300 of the 3000 habitants of the city became homeless. So Umea is not a city that has been treated very well by the history, until nowadays.
