Experience in the University of Malaya, Malaysia by Nur

Generally, what is University of Malaya like?

University of Malaya is the oldest university in Malaysia and one of the most prestigious universities in my country. It has a good reputation for creating successful students. It is in a huge area which has some connections with a few places like Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, etc. We have a diversity of students from different races, religions, ethnicity and nationalities.

What are the facilities like?

We have many faculties and student residences in the university area. We also have a garden, a lake, exercise equipment, a theater, many restaurants, etc. You can jog around the whole university. There are also buses for students to go to their faculty or to go back to their residence. There is a library in the middle of the area and we have a 24 hours section at the library where you can study there anytime you want. It is open not only during exam week. There are also buses for you to go to the nearest train station. There is also a shopping complex near the university and besides the University has the Malaya Medical Center, it is a hospital which is also part of the university.

What are the tutors like?

Since I'm studying in the Language Faculty. My lecturers are local people and also international lecturers from Latino American and Spain. So far I like all my tutors. I can understand what they are teaching and if you have any problem or something you don't understand, you can feel free to ask them by meeting face to face or you can contact them. They will be happy to help you. They are very nice and sometimes we will have lunch together with the lecturer. In class, they will explain until you understand and they will guide you so that you can score your paper.

Are the lessons easy in University of Malaya?

For me, it depends on what courses you are taking. Most courses in the University of Malaya is in Malay language and English except for the foreign language studies. So basically if you can speak, understand and write in English, it won't be a problem at all. Or if you would like to learn our main language which is Malay, that will be an interesting class for you to join. Moreover, if you really work hard and pay attention in class, it won't be that hard. Make sure you choose courses that you really like. And maybe the exams are a bit tough but like I said, it depends on what courses are you taking.

Does the University organise activities? If so, what are they like?

Yes. In our university, we have many clubs or groups that always organize events, performance and activity booths. For example we have a food festival, or sale, the international week when the international students sell their traditional food or they perform their traditional dance. There are activity booths where the students can choose which clubs they want to join and many more activities.

Do you think there is a good quality of teaching?

Based on my experience, in most of the courses that I took, the quality of teaching is very good. I can understand the topics, the explanation is also understandable. And if I don't understand, I just have to raise up my hand and ask the lecturer, and they will answer the question.
