Experience in University of Iceland, Iceland by David
Generally, what is University of Iceland like?
It's a small campus, so, coming from a small college during my BA studies, it was a familiar experience for me. The size of the university means that it's easy for students to find where they need to go and very easy to develop a good relationship with their professors and fellow students.
What are the facilities like?
Campus facilities are quite modern and up to date. Every building has some place students can hang out, but the Studentakjallarinn in the basement of Háskólatorg is one of the best. Also, the National Library and National Museum are scarcely more than 10 minutes away if you can't find the books you need in Árnagarður.
What are the tutors like?
I did not take part in any tutoring while at HÍ, so I'm not the most qualified to weigh in on this subject.
Are the lessons easy in University of Iceland?
Depends on the program/your academic strengths and weaknesses. Quite a few programs are taught in English, and all the faculty and staff speak fluent English, sometimes even several other languages.
Does the University organise activities? If so, what are they like?
Yes, there are university activities. However, since the campus is so small and not all the students live on campus, it can sometimes be difficult to stay in the loop about what's happening when and where. Also, a few of the activity advertisements only come over webmail or in Icelandic. (If you think something might be up your alley but don't speak enough Icelandic to know, the people in charge will definitely be willing to help you out, though). Studentakjallarinn is very good at advertising events, and they often have something going on there (i. e. –movies, sports, pub quizzes, concerts, etc. )
Do you think there is a good quality of teaching?
Yes. The professors take a very mature approach to their students. They trust you to do what's needed and don't hold your hand throughout the semester, but don't think that means they won't help you. No matter what questions you have, they'll still be willing to help out.
Are there any stories you can share?
Too many. But I can say how they all started. Get to know your classmates, Icelandic or international. I met some of my best friends this way. So many people from so many different countries, backgrounds, parts of Iceland, etc. come to HÍ, so it's really quite easy to make connections the world over.
