Experience in University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom by Agnieszka

Generally, what is University of Hertfordshire like?

The University of Hertfordshire is based in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, in the UK. It has its facilities spread across 2 campuses: de Havilland Campus is a base for Business School, School of Law, School of Education & School of Humanities. The College Lane Campus encompasses all courses related to science, engineering, arts, media, graphic design, IT, music, film, etc.

My course is part of the Business School therefore I have a greater knowledge on the de Havilland Campus. In general, the university is very modern and keeps on making renovations. There are big plans for modernisation and to provide with even greater amount of facilities.

The university is a really friendly place. On campus we have established the Student Union association for all student-related issues, events, activities. We also have Student Representatives and Student Ambasadors who are the voice of the students and act as intermediary between students and tutors/the institutuion.

Apart from that there are many different social circles and sport-related activities that every one can participate in. A organisation named Active Students arranges free of charge sports sessions for every student who turns up. There is plenty of stuff going on on both campuses every day, and I believe everyone can find something appealing.

What are the tutors like?

The tutors in general are very helpful and student-centered. They reply to all e-mails sent by students and are there to help you out at anything that you struggle with. They are happy to give advice and always explain things at their best. Most of them offer drop-in sessions when you can come in to their office and speak one-to-one if you need.

Are the lessons easy in University of Hertfordshire?

I think it does depend on the subject you are studying.

I heard that the engineering courses are pretty hard, but I think that's nothing new.

In Business School I think there are a few subjects that you might find a bit harder to cope with, but with systematic approach to the module and being up-to-date with the assignments, and having clarified what you need to do for it, I believe you'll be fine. There are always other students who might be able to help, and of course there are tutors who you can always ask for help. But in general I think it is hard to fail a course at Business School.

Does the University organise activities? If so, what are they like?

As mentioned above, you can find plenty of activities organised at the university, arranged by university itself or by Students Union.
