Experience in University of Antwerp, Belgium by Jasmin

Generally, what is University of Antwerp like?

UA is a university with a good reputation: the quality of the courses are high. There are many faculties spread across the centre of town, some buildings are older than others. My favorite is 'stadscampus', the main faculty with a beautiful inner garden surrounded by 18th century houses which also function as class rooms.

What are the facilities like?

Overall the facilities are good. Free internet access for students in every faculty and large class rooms with all the necessary equipment. The only downside is that there is only a cafeteria in the main faculty. But since all the buildings are situated in the centre of Antwerpen, it's easy to find some place to have a quick cheap lunch. Also, we have a sports programme which include competitive sports like basketball, football, badminton,... and fitness classes such as aerobics and BBB.

There is a large library next to the computer room and study halls.

Also, if you have problems not related to study, there is a psychology faculty with therapists who are ready to help. The same goes for if you are looking for a student room to stay or a student job.

What are the tutors like?

It depends: some are more strict than others. But all are very qualified.

Are the lessons easy in University of Antwerp?

Again, it depends. Overall the courses are not easy and they cover a broad range of knowlegde. The hardest courses I followed were statistics because of the mathematic aspect. For this course, the professor organized extra lessons for those who needed it.

Also, the course social law was difficult but in a different way: there was so much information and theory to process and it was easy to get confused in that way.

Does the University organise activities? If so, what are they like?

  • Student parties, but I think most of them are organized by students rather than the university.
  • Sport activities: there is a weekly schedule which include competitive sports and fitness programmes. You pay an initial fee of 15 euro. In return you receive a 'sport card' with which you have access to all the classes for free. Also, with that card, you have the possibility to go to other sport clubs at a reduced price.
  • Job Fairs for graduates.
  • Student travels: programmes like erasmus and 'noord zuid'
  • Oxfam days: breakfast at uni with Oxfam products
  • Cinema: since I studied film sciences, I could go to the cinema for 2 euro.
  • During exam periods, the university provides class rooms where you can study in a quiet and stimulating environment.

Do you think there is a good quality of teaching?

Yes, In my opinion the professors know a lot about their field of study and are able to answer all your questions. Usually they provide you not only with the necessary papers, slides and books but also offer additional information and in some cases extra exercises (eg statistics).

Are there any stories you can share?

Yes, but that will take too long to write down. I had a wonderful experience studying at UA.
