Erasmus Alicante 2013/14
Having just finished my erasmus experience in the University of Alicante I thought it would be helpful to write a little bit about my time there.
Finding A Place To Stay
When moving to Alicante, I decided to find accomodation in San Vicente del Raspeig simply because it was easy to get to uni with less worry about time and money getting there. San Vicente is a lovely little place with lots of shops and cafes to go to when you don't feel like heading into the city. I chose to stay in an accomodation found online called 'Villa Universitaria' and would highly reccomend it. Although slightly more expensive than other student accomodations (375 euros a month rent) it was worth the price as staff were friendly, the place was immaculately clean and they have great facilities including the likes of TV rooms and a swimming pool and football/tennis court and of course you can just roll out of bed, cross the road and be in the university complex ( perfect for hangover days ).
Nightlife...
The only downside to living outwith the city centre is access to nightlife. There is a night bus that runs on the hour on Friday's and Saturday's however, should you want to go out during the week a taxi back would normally cost 11 euros or there abouts. Of course this is nothing if split between 3 or 4 people. Alicante's nightlife is great which a friendly atmosphere making it all the better. You would either find us in the barrio at places such as Austins and Carpe Diem, Quinta Avenida, Havanas or in the port. All have good music and a great atmosphere ( although the port is a bit cold towards winter )
The University
In terms of the university. I chose to do subjects from the 'International Business Programme' which I am aware is no longer running this year. Despite this, I know they are offering some if not all of the classes I chose in the Business and Economics Department of the university. I found the IBP classes were insightful, fun and taught by good teachers who would go out of there way to help you. I also did two economics subjects which I will simply say were a lot harder than I expected and nothing I had covered in the UK previously. I can't comment on classes from other any part of the university.
Trips and Things
I would advice that you make sure to join several Erasmus Alicante groups and pages on facebook and go to all the welcome days in order to get to know the place and people. Not only do they provide good day events for Erasmus students but also have trips to amazing places letting you see a bit more of Spain than just Alicante. You could even take a trip to Morroco!
Then there are the carnivals and fiestas that take place in Alicante which are amazing to experience, so bright and colourful and ful of joy.
Overall, I would highly reccomend Alicante for a study abroad, its fun and exciting and a great choice for your Erasmus exchange!
