In this article I would like to share some tips that you can use when you are going to travel in Tavira.
How I discovered Tavira, what I saw and why I would like to go again there you will find out in this article :)
Tavira is an ancient Moorish town that has retained its unique character and heritage to become one of the finest resort towns of the Algarve. Tavira is located on the eastern side of the Algarve, approximately 30 km east of Faro and 25km west of the Spanish border. The town extends along the banks of the Gilão River and is a delightful mix of traditional Portuguese architecture. Tavira is a joy to explore with its plethora of historic buildings and decorative churches, all of which are set around charming plazas and pretty cobbled streets.
Tavira is also knowns as a nice destination for a beach holiday as to the south of the town you can find beaches of the Ilha de Tavira. This beaches are protected by the Ria Formosa Nature Park and here you can find very nice sand and clear water, sometimes with a big waves. In Tavira you can combine beautiful beaches with an impresive portuguese culture.
Top things to do in Tavira:
- explore the city, including the castle, the ancient city walls...
- relax yourself on the stunning beaches of the Ilha de Tavira, which are only a short ferry ride (you have two spots from where you can take the ferry)
- discover all varied churches, you will find 36 churches ranging from gothic to renaissance
- hire a kayak or rent a boat and explore Ria Formosa Nature Park
- stay on the island with the tent
The town has an excellent range of authentic restaurants and family-run accommodation options that are suitable for all budgets. We tried when we visit Tavira fig ice cream and from that moment fig ice cream is one of my favorite and also if you will try indian food you will never regret!
Try to do one or all of the following things that I recommend to do and you will discover the beauty of this city. Rich in history and culture and food.
- See Tavira through the camera obscura which is housed in the old water tower next to the castle. Camera obscura use Leonardo Da Vinci technology to give visitors a 360º view of the place, in this case of Tavira city.
- You will find near to the camera obscura a really beautiful garden, go there and discover this little left of Tavira´s medieval castle.
- There is also a roman bridge, extremely photogenic. You might see street sellers on the bridge or people fishing in the Gilão river.
- TRY fig ice cream! Near to the roman bridge you will find Gelataria Delizia and from that ice cream shop you can try fig ice cream or something that you like!
- Go to praia do barril to see the anchor cemetery
- Go inside one of Tavira’s churches and do not forget about Tavira’s museums
- Look out for local craft market because you can find a lot. And go shopping for crafts cause Tavira is a great place to find tasteful, arty products you would love to have in your home or to give as a gift.
- The list can continue :D
