What is it like to live in Swindon? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Swindon itself, whilst having a lot to offer in the way of entertainment and shops, is slightly run down and not somewhere I feel very comfortable walking at night. However, it is a town situated in the middle of one of the most beautiful regions in Britain and serves as a great access point to the gorgeous countryside and characterful villages nearby.

What is the student lifestyle like in Swindon?

Swindon is not a traditional student town and therefore not somewhere to consider if you're really looking for the proper student experience. That said, it isn't far from Bristol or Bath, especially if you can drive.

How much does it cost to live in Swindon?

Swindon is one of the most affordable towns in Britain in terms of the house price-job opportunity ratio. You can definitely hope to find a nice place for a relatively low price.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Swindon? Is there any advice you can give?

It is relatively easy to find accommodation in Swindon, and if not in the main town then in the villages surrounding it.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food in Swindon is very typical of the rest of Britain, though like any large town/city there is of course a large variety of foreign cuisine available as well.

What places would you recommend visiting in Swindon?

Lydiard Park is a gorgeous park/country estate just outside of Swindon where I love to walk my dogs. As well as being a brilliant place to walk around, they also host many great events there, such as Open Air Cinemas (I saw Grease which was great fun with everyone dressing up!) and a huge bonfire/firework display for Bonfire Night.

Coate Water Country Park is another good place for a day out. I haven't been myself but I know it is a popular place to hang out with friends.

Obviously Stonehenge can be found in Wiltshire, but I would recommend Avebury, a less famous but more accessible stone circle surrounding the magical and beautiful village full of incredible gift/craft shops and a lovely (and haunted) pub - The Red Lion.

Is it good to eat out in Swindon? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Coal Grill & Bar is a trendy place to eat out, though there aren't very many vegetarian options. It does, however, offer a great selection of cocktails.

Is the nightlife good in Swindon? Where is good to go?

I don't know much about nightlife in Swindon, but I can tell you about the 'mental oriental' in the nearby town of Royal Wootton Bassett - a nightclub above a Chinese takeaway. If that doesn't sound like the best thing you've ever heard of then I don't know what would.

What advice would you give future students heading to Swindon?

Take care of yourself as Swindon has a fairly high crime rate. Also make sure to make the most of the beautiful surrounding Wiltshire countryside! And if you get bored of the slow pace then there is a very cheap train/bus to Oxford!
