Experience in Sundsvall, Sweden by Isabelle
What is it like to live in Sundsvall? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I have lived in many different places around Sundsvall and it has been both in the city center as well as the countryside.
As I am a country girl and a citygirl I think that Sundsvall is one of the best cities in Sweden to live in if you like to have close to the vibrating city pulse as well as the calm and soothing sound of nature.
I would totally recommend it to people who want to move. Even if they move from another Swedish city to Sundsvall or if they are moving in from another country.
In Sundsvall, thre are a lot of people from different cultures which makes it really easy to find people both from your own culture or from a culture you are interested in.
What is the student lifestyle like in Sundsvall?
The student lifestyle is great! All the students are so generous and kindhearted and even though we don't have the exact kind of "fraternities" as you can see in American movies we still have a great connection with each other and since its not a big town, every student know each other which helps a lot if you need someone to help you with your studies.
How much does it cost to live in Sundsvall?
I would say that it's not that expensive. If you are looking to live in an apartment in the very center of the city I would recommend you to have in mind that the rent will get higher than if you would live a few kilometers away from the city center.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Sundsvall? Is there any advice you can give?
No, it is not that tricky. As long as you are willing to have an open mind you will always be able to find an apartment.
I would recommend becoming a member of some of the accommodation in Sundsvall groups on Facebook.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is great. We have a big variety of different restaurants and no matter what you are in the mood of, you will be able to find it in this city.
What places would you recommend visiting in Sundsvall?
I would recommend going to the mountains. We have two of them, on each side of the city. It is the North mountain and then the South mountain. The south mountain has a bowling arcade, a spa, a hotel, and a really nice running track. It also has a theme park that is one of the few in the world.
Then I would also recommend going to Alnö, an island about 15 minutes away from the city. The island has a lot of beaches and really nice nature.
Is it good to eat out in Sundsvall? Can you tell us your favorite spots?
Yes, it is! I would recommend 'Stekhuset' a steakhouse with really good meat.
If you like Indian food we have an Indian restaurant (Curry House) that serves really good naan-bread. We also have a big variety of Asian restaurants but my favorite is 'Ming Palace'. They have among the best-fried chicken I have ever tasted.
Is the nightlife good in Sundsvall? Where is good to go?
Yes, it is! My favorite place is Allstars and then Oscars. The prices are good and they play really good music in both places.
What advice would you give future students heading to Sundsvall?
I would tell them to really seize the day and make sure to have the time of your life!
