Experience in Stirling, United Kingdom by Yasmin
What is it like to live in Stirling? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
When I first moved to Stirling, I fell in love with the place. The university campus is beautiful. I've made so many friends since I've been here. However, it's my fourth year living here and I'm starting to get bored. It's the smallest city in Scotland so it doesn't have the greatest choices when it comes to do things in the city.
What is the student lifestyle like in Stirling?
Student lifestyle is great! I remember i went out almost everyday in my first year of university! The university union really takes care of their students.
How much does it cost to live in Stirling?
at the moment i am paying £375 a month with bills, but I'm sure there are apartments that could cost you at least £240 (you won't probably find them for less than that).
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Stirling? Is there any advice you can give?
Just beware of letting agencies. I learnt the hard way. Try to find private landlords. The residential services at university have a list of private landlords, so I would recommend looking at the list and getting in contact with them that way. There are also signs around the university with people looking for flatmates.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
I have started to take more time cooking! I hate microwave/oven meals so i've resorted to hunting down recipes online and and following them. I prefer making my food from scratch; lasagne, canneloni, soup, salads...It's healthier and often works out cheaper.
What places would you recommend visiting in Stirling?
I recommend going to the Wallace Monument and Stirling Castle. Besides, the university campus is worth seeing. but if you study there you will definitely get to see it! I also recommend finding a way to get to Loch Lomond!
Is it good to eat out in Stirling? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Stirling does have a bit of a variety; i don't eat out often but i personally like Nandos. However there is also Frankie & Benny's, The Kilted Kangaroo, the Filling Station, and Papa Joes.
Is the nightlife good in Stirling? Where is good to go?
Stirling nightlife is not bad! In fact, I LOVED it in first year, although nightclubs here close earlier than most European countries! Besides, there are only two nightclubs (Dusk and Fubar) There are still lots of bars!
What advice would you give future students heading to Stirling?
If you want to improve your English, speak to your tutor to do a language exchange with someone at Stirling university. Stirling hosts a lot of foreign students and there are many students who study in Stirling who are willing to practice their foreign language (me included! )
Try and make the most of your stay, try not to say no and take warm clothes, as it rains a lot here. Just have fun!
