A must when visiting Lisbon, Sintra

Published by flag-it nahom worku — 4 years ago

Dear readers, this time around I am going to try and convince you to go visit one of the most beautiful and preciously preserved parts of a palace just outside of Lisbon, called Sintra. This area widely known by tourists will enchant you with its beauty and nature. Its typical fresh breez coming from the trees as you walk around the Sintra is a pure gift from nature. If you actually go around yuo will notice that there are a lot of places where it is very slopy so consider going up a road uphill. Of course in the summer you might be like...'wow I am sweating like a doney' because walking on uphill road is no joke but hey consider as a challenge and just do it. If you happen to visit Sintra with your travel buddies then it might be easier as you can encourage one another to hold on and continue walking, even when dripping sweat from every pore of your skin. I am sure that the whole hot weather situation would not be an issue if you choose to travel in winter or during spring time. So si back and relax as I take you on a private tour around the Park and National Palace of Pena.

Some background about Park and National Palace of Pena

Like any other travelhollic going around the globe with a somewhat of a backpack then one thing is for sure: the Park and National Palace of Pena located in the area of Sintra is on your go to list. No wonder I saw a huge crowd waiting in the line to get their tickets for the enterance to the Park and National Palace of Pena. I saw all kind of tourists coming fromm all walks of life and from different parts of the world. You will actually get to notice it if you for example pay attention to the language people are speaking when standing in line at the ticket office. At first I was taken off guard as I witnessed so many people gathered in one place, having pretty much the same objective to visit and go sight seeing. This made me think that there is a lot in store to be seen and to be marveled by. Park and National Palace of Pena is one of the most iconic piece of monument which the country of Portugal is known for. Every postcard depicts the beauty of the National Palace of Pena, like this one for example.

The entrance to the Park and National Palace of Pena is relatively small and is found once you walk uphill for a couple of kilometres depending from the point you start walking from. There is a ticket office where you will be charged around 6 euros for the enterance (I payed the standard price and don't remember a possibility to have a price reduction for students, maybe they have started by now).

One thing you should really consider is whether you are interested in visiting the inside of the National Palace of Pena or not. If you want to go inside the Palace (in summer, especially first week of August) consider that there will be long queues just to be able to visit the indoor of the Palace. Now I am sure that every Palace has its own uniqueness about it in terms of history, interior desing and charm but since standing to a very long queue wasn't something great in the midst of the hot summer, me together with my travel buddies decided to see the Palace only from the outside, and let me tell you there are plenty of things to see.

Once you got your ticket you can get inside the Park and National Palace of Pena and my advice at this point, before you start on your sightseeing is to take some rest and have a snack or something to drink. This will help you a lot and boost your energy as you have a lot of walking ahead of you. Actually taking a small break before the begining of a big walking day is a must do. While I spent a week visiting Lisbon a friend of mine (whom also happened to be my host) made sure that everyday we had a snack like for example some biscuits and a packed juice (a bottle of water is a must have at all costs, as you can fill it up many times during the day). So since the hot weather might get in the way making you feel dizzy and tired, bring along a quick snack and something to drink, trust me you will thank me later.
