Raisa's Erasmus Experience in San Jose, Costa Rica

Why did you choose to go to San Jose, Costa Rica?

I got a scholarship to study at the University of Costa Rica.

How long was the scholarship for? How much money did you get to help you?

2 years.

What's the university like in San Jose?

Excellent, the University of Costa Rica is among the top universities in Latin America.

Would you recommend the city and university to other students?

The city is really boring and lacks charm. I wouldn't recommend it as a tourist destination nor to get a proper experience of the country. However, it's a great university, very demanding and of a high level.

What's the food like in Costa Rica?

It's THE worst thing about the country, they don't know anything about food and only eat beans. The food is simple like the people.

Did you struggle to find accommodation in San Jose?

No, I had really useful recommendations.

What's the cost of living like in San Jose?

It's one of the most expensive countries in the region... far more expensive that Europe or the USA. An approximation would be $800-1000 minimum for a student with basic costs. This can increase with rent fluctuating from $400-600.

How's the language? Did you do some form of university course?

No, I speak spanish.

What's the most economical way to travel to San Jose from your city?

Plane.

Where would you recommend for a night out in San Jose?

Some bars, nothing special.

And how about places to eat in San Jose? Can you name a couple of your favourite places?

No, the only decent places I know are very expensive ($30 for a meal), and the cheaper ones are horrible.

How about the culture?

It's a country rich in the arts, music and theatre, however the country doesn't have much history, or any cultural or touristic places that are worth bothering with. There's nothing to see. The beautiful side of the country is the eco-tourism, fauna, beaches, etc in remote areas hours away from the city.

Any advice you want to give to future students going to San Jose?

San Jose is VERY expensive, it's not worth it. Other countries in the area such as Nicaragua, Panama or Colombia will give you a much better experience with more beautiful places and affordable living, full of history, culture, fab cuisine, and the SAME beautiful beaches... maybe even better!
