A New Experience: Brazil
In February 2014, I started a new adventure in my life: an international mobility in Rio de Janeiro - the famous city, better known as "Cidade Maravilhosa" (Marvellous City).
Living in Copacabana, in a private condominium, with lots of security mesures in the building: this was the first culture shock: in Rio all the "safe" people have to live in private condominiums, with complete safety day and night.
Safety tip: be careful with mobile phones, purses, earrings and the like, and money at large. Use taxis (chosen from the taxi agency), always use the bus with your eyes open and never ask for a ride from anyone.
What to visit: Don't forget to get to know all the of the Cariocas points - Pão de Açucar on the Urca Hill, Christ the Redeemer (go up on foot or by cable car), Ipanema Beach, Copacabana, wacth the sunset on the Arpoador, go to Alto do Vidigal (a big party for tourists), The Tijuca Bar, the famous "Lapa" where you can find the Selarón stairway and lots of bars to dance the Forró, Setanejo and Samba; Confeitaria Colombo in the centre of the city.
Eating: don't forget to eat and drink - Acai, coconut water, Brazilian Feijoada (bean stew), typical grills, crisps, natural juices and Picanha (steak);
A must see (compulsory): Go to Buzios and Angra dos Reis, as well as Ilha Grande (in the Rio de Janeiro district - where I would advise going by boat);
Do Hang-Gliding!
Although it's not very safe, there's lots of traffic and confusion, I'm absolutely certain that you will surrender to this city - The Cidade Carioca - The Marvellous City - the city that has one of the best universities in the world.
Enjoy your travels,
Elsa
