Drinking with Ernest Hemmingway
Getting there
This one is a great option for those doing an exchange in Reims city in France. This small city is located east of Paris. It's about forty minutes by TGV or an hour fifty minutes by bus companies such as Flixbus or Ouibus. This small city of just under 190, 000 people is filled with little bars and restaurants that truly give this city its charm. Today, I’ll be talking about the most popular Erasmus student bar of the city, the Ernest Hemingway.
For those who want to come to Reims from Paris will have to choose between the two forms of transport. The bus services will take you to Champagne Ardenne station. From here you’ll need to grab a nearby tram for 1. 60 euros to get to the heart of the city. On the other hand, if you take the train you could choose to end up in the main station located just north of the Ernest Hemingway.
Either way, it's not hard to get around this small city. The bar is located on the Place Drouet d'Erlon. This street is the most popular night out street in Reims. You will have access to an assortment of different eateries and bars which I may talk in detail in other pieces. Regardless, our focus is on the Ernest Hemingway today. This bar is the heart of many exchange student parties and get together. As the bar receives many patrons, they have set up dozens of tables outside for you and your mates to sit down and down a drink. There are seats located in the secluded alley area or the bustling front area. Often on a night out you’ll see multiple groups of people enjoying a drink.
The bar
The inside area has a cozy feel to it. There are several tables located immediately after entering. To your left upon entrance there will be a Tabaco shop which has a door from the outside and one that connects it to the Ernest Hemingway. The inside has a comfortable feel with a red hue walls holding photos and art posters of many types. In the back area you have a table tucked into a corner where you can hide away from the rest of the bar with a group of mates. There is also a billiards table where you can challenge your mates. Take note, it is illegal to publicly gamble in places such as these.
The billiards table area also doubles as a dance floor. When the nights light up, the table will be moved to the side and you’ll be dancing right next to a small stage where the DJ will be jamming different tunes. Often on these nights people would dance on the bar itself. On some wild nights they would light up the bar with actual flames. It's all regulated and safe. Lastly, the bar itself offers many different types of drinks deals to enjoy from. There is even a jagerbomb machine ready to top you up for any adventure you’re looking forward to.
The Hemingway is also located quite close to bars such as La Bodega and many more. Across the street you can find one of the most common eateries for Erasmus students on a night out on this street, Istanbul restaurant.
One last thing. The Hemingway is known for its portable beer taps. That is to say, you can order a large vertical cylinder of beer connected to a tap and place it on your table. From here, you and your mates can enjoy a great drink that’ll last you a while. The DJs are also pretty good. They have different themes from Reggaeton, Techno, Electronic, Hip Hop and much more. The bathrooms are located in the downstairs area in the back of the bar. It sometimes gets busy on crazy nights. They are usually kept relatively clean.
Overall, Hemingway is the type of bar you go to start the night or simply spend the whole night here for a few casual drinks. The prices aren’t unreasonable, and they serve some nice wines and cocktails. If you ever decide to visit Reims or are doing an Erasmus here then I would recommend you check this place out.
