GLENORCHY | QUEENSTOWN’S TREASURE

Published by flag- Oat Sitalasai — 9 years ago

Queenstown, a town in New Zealand’s South Island is one of the many places you need to visit if you’re ever nearby. By all means, a flight from Sydney - or elsewhere on the east coast of Australia - is reasonable cheap and very fast. If you would like to fly into New Zealand, I would recommend that you book through JetStar. This post though, will specially highlight a spot just outside of Queenstown, called Glenorchy

If you’re not up to reading what I have to praise about this treasure of New Zealand, you could easily google “Glenorchy, New Zealand” on Google Images, and the pictures will tell you all about it. You will really understand why I would describe this place a treasure. It is somewhat of a challenge these days to find that perfect getaway. A getaway far from a big city, far from buildings, far from pollution, far from the stress that comes about the modern age. Glenorchy is your answer of that perfect get away. A nice drive from Queenstown, through its calm surroundings, you will arrive at this treasure spot.

Before I forget to mention this, you really need to be sure that your cameras and phones are fully charged for this, because you will be taking a lot of pictures! First thing first, Glenorchy has a small wooden warehouse (not really sure how to describe it), in which is one of the most picturesque man made spot to take photos. You could see from the picture I took that there’s quite a charm about it. Everything from the timeless brick-red color to the black and white sign and shouts out its origin. It’s just something you need to see before your own eyes to be able to feel. Wow, that last sentence was quite dramatic, Oat.

Other than this awesome creation from humans, the best of Glenorchy is actually what nature has created and what humans have respected. The lake is super peaceful, the air was probably the freshest I’ve ever inhaled in my life, and the mountains are as beautiful and green as they get. Oh, there’s also that occasion fog and mist on the mountains, which really enhances that experience of nature’s beauty. I’m not a huge lover of natural surroundings about you really can’t help but admire how beautiful it is. the beauty of Queenstown and its surroundings was something my friends and I talked about all the time during our trip, and is still something I still admire until today.

Just next to the little house, you have a mini beach (not the right word again) on both sides. Here, we really enjoyed ourselves with the challenge of skipping rocks in the lake. It’s one of those activities and feelings that you could only get when leaving a big city. If rock skipping is not your cup of tea, you can also take a walk down the wooden bridge (super rustic and awesome) that would lead you to the pier. Here you can enjoy the lake, the bird, the mountains and the fresh air at point blank. The angles for really good pictures here are just incredible. Whether its a selfie or a really artistic shot, it’s got everything.

And do not worry about this place taking too much time from your trip. It will take no more than 45 minutes to enjoy this natural treasure of Queenstown, and the drive to and from is also another enjoyable experience. Unfortunately there’s no places to eat nearby, so I would recommend that you have something before or after your drive to Glenorchy.

It’s definitely one of the most beautiful spots in the Queenstown area, hands down. As nice and it is, I would not go here during rainy days. I mentioned that it’s a drive from Queenstown, hence I would not trust the road and driving in the rain. Throughout our trip, we unfortunately came across quite a few dead cats and other creatures on the road, and the rain and fog won’t help you see better. Glenorchy is a photo stop and it would be ruined by the rain and extreme amount of fog. By all means, if you’re in Queenstown or are  debating whether or not you should go there, my advice to you is, yes. Yes, just go there, for three-four days. There’s a lot to see and a lot to do, and a lot to eat too (very important for me and my friends). I will try to find pictures from my time in Queenstown and write another post about how great it is along the road.
