What is it like to live in Pretoria? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Pretoria is a quaint city. Closer to being a town than a city in terms of density. It is lovely to live in especially because of the weather. It is tough to get around without a car unless in the city centre or in the student town of Hatfield.
What is the student lifestyle like in Pretoria?
It used to be great. It's going through a change due to development around the student town. There is a high hipster culture which is great when in the cbd
How much does it cost to live in Pretoria?
It is relative depending on where you live. In the east property is expensive, around R6 000 plus for a 16sqm apartment in the student town. The same amount can get you a larger studio apartment in the cbd
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Pretoria? Is there any advice you can give?
It can be. Start early. The semesters in south Africa start in January and June. So the periods between those are an ideal time to start looking.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food is okay. Mostly imported dishes. Although I don't know much in this regard.
What places would you recommend visiting in Pretoria?
There's plenty. The usual tourist spots:
Union buildings
Freedom Park
The city centre has amazing architecture
Church square
The forts
Cradle of humankind
Is it good to eat out in Pretoria? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Food markets like the Market on main. This is pricey for locals but could be cheap for expats
Is the nightlife good in Pretoria? Where is good to go?
No it's not
What advice would you give future students heading to Pretoria?
Make friends with locals and try get to know underground scenes. Don't be overly cautious, Pretoria is fairly safe in comparison to other south African cities.
