After spending days on Booking.com looking for a hotel in Porto, we came across Porto Palácio Hotel & Spa. From the photos this hotel looked really interesting; but what attracted me the most was the rooftop bar located on the eighteenth floor of the hotel. You have a breath-taking view of Porto from the outside - we honestly didn’t think twice about booking this hotel.

From the moment you enter you are immersed in a luxurious, contemporary hall with the rotating doors and a member of staff ready to greet you and take your bags up to your room. You proceed to the check in desk where you are given your keys and a voucher for two complimentary glasses of Port wine, which was a very welcoming gift.

We take the lift to the tenth floor to our room, 1005, where our bags were kindly left. The first thing I noticed about the room was the gigantic bed with four huge pillows – there is nothing I love more than big comfortable pillows. Secondly, I noticed the view from our window, which looked upon the city. The bathroom was separated from the shower room, which I never understand - why do hotels do this? But then again, the white marble walls and floors made up for this. The modern decor of the rooms, the cream coloured carpets and the dark wooden furniture created an elegant and cosy atmosphere, making me feel right at home.

The Rooms vary from an executive room to a Grand Palacio Suite, and each room has free Internet access, air conditioning, heated floor, bathrobe and slippers and 24 hour room service. Anything you could ever need, you would find in this hotel; twice a day the cleaning lady comes to tidy up the room, make the bed and leave little chocolates, which I find really sweet.

The rooms are not the only reason this hotel earned the five stars; the spa and wellness centre, the fitness centre, the restaurant and the rooftop bar all contribute to the excellent rating of this hotel.

The Wellness centre of Porto Palácio Hotel is a complete paradise for relaxation and tranquillity. In the Spa you will find a variety of multi-sensory programmes and treatments provided by team of professionals. The decor of the spa is very specific, designed to combine calming colours, flavouring and architectural decor in order to provide an unforgettable experience. The spa contains a large swimming pool, Jacuzzi, Turkish bath, Laconium, Swiss Shower, a Shower of Sensations and heated beds. The Fitness club contains a cardio fitness gym, gym activities, two indoor pools, a sauna and a Turkish bath. For sure you would not be short of things to do in this hotel.

Porto Palácio hotel has a wide range of bars and restaurants to satisfy all your needs. Enjoy traditional Portuguese food such as the francesinhas in the Portobeer Beerhouse. The decor of this restaurant is very unique: it is built over two floors with a gold and lacquered white on the ground floor and a prevalence in black for a more intimate and luxurious experience on the first floor. For something more casual, try the buffet in Madruga Restaurant. The Góshò restaurant is my favourite restaurant, as it combines traditional Japanese and fusion cuisine creating high quality sushi.

The Nautilus Bar and Bistro is a more casual restaurant dedicated to quick buffets with mainly cold dishes such as salads, ham and cheese etc.

Finally, the VIP lounge located on the eighteenth floor that offers an exceptional panoramic view over the city and opens from 5 p. m. until 1 a. m. Come to the VIP lounge for an aperitif or taste one of their large selection of whiskies. On Sundays, there is a special Brunch in the VIP lounge with a wide selection of pastries, eggs and bacon, cheeseboard and salads, fish and hot courses such as pasta and meatloaf!
