Experience in Port Harcourt, Nigeria by ANUOLUWAPO
What is it like to live in Port Harcourt? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
It's a great experience to live in Port Harcourt. To learn and mix with a totally different race, culture, tribe and a different climate condition. It's an amazing city filled with amazing people that are ready to help and are accommodating.
I'll strongly recommend it to anyone that wants to visit Nigeria especially Rivers state where the city of Port Harcourt is located. It is fun filled and an exciting city for outdoor gaming and relaxation.
In this city there are a lot of spots for eating out, with special and sumptuous meals that are somewhat affordable. Moving around is quite easy due to the available taxi's at anytime of the day.
What is the student lifestyle like in Port Harcourt?
The student Life style is fun if one decides that if would be. There are facilities such as public libraries that are government owned but is opened to anyone. Except for the fact that one has to register with a little amount of money. The experience there is amazing and for parties it's advisable to do those indoor and not outdoor because in some areas due to the rules laid down by the people living around they don't allow late night outdoor parties. If you're someone that loves fun and relaxation there are spots that would fulfill your desires at the same time studying is an amazing idea this is due to the fact that there are a lot of things and places to carry out research and everything you want to do if you are the strict study lover.
How much does it cost to live in Port Harcourt?
In Port Harcourt as compared to other parts of Nigeria it is quite expensive especially when you decide to always eat out. Cooking indoor and having to prepare great meals is cheaper and less expensive.
On the other hand depending on time schedule and money at hand you could order for food and get it delivered right at your doorstep. Accommodation is another factor to consider. Its better to know what you want and how you want it in terms of accommodation. For me personally I'll perfer a room with bathroom and toilet and kitchen. This is because it's more spacious and more convenient and private. You could get a roommate based on agreement.
Transportation: Taking the taxi/public bus is cheaper as compared to taking private taxi's. It's good, nice and comfortable too but expensive in a way.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Port Harcourt? Is there any advice you can give?
It's not so difficult. You have to ensure that you try to talk to people especially your fellow students and try to explain what you want as pertaining your accommodation. Ask for areas according to what you want. Never forget to ask for the price range that you can afford.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food has a lot of variety especially ranging from their local diet to the international exquisite cusines.
My favorite dishes are: African salad with fried fish & Bole( rosted yam, plantain with roasted fish and sauce).
They are amazing and cheap
