Erasmus Experience in Pori, Finland by Manu
Why did you choose to go to Pori, Finland?
I simply wanted to discover Finland.
My university was partnered only with this city and I liked it a lot and how it allows you to visit other surrounding cities.
- Helsinki is only 3h30 away on the bus
- Tampere 2h
- Turku 2h
- Rauma 50min
How long was is stay? How much aid do you receive?
8 months (4 months of class and 4 months internship in Finland).
Unfortunately, I do not get aid because my course is not an Erasmus exchange strictly speaking.
How is student life in Pori?
Pori isn't a huge city but it has 3 clubs and numerous bars all the same. I recommend Amarillo for cheap beers during the student happy hours on Wednesday nights or Café Europa with its sofas.
Even though it is a small city, the university organizes nights out on Wednesdays almost every week, if you like to party there aren't that many places to go out :)
Would you recommend the city and the university of Pori to other students?
Yes, definitely.
What is the food like in this country?
Not very diverse, lots of dishes based around potatoes.
I recommend that you try reindeer and all the little berries.
And of course salmiakki and other liquorice :)
Did you have trouble finding accommodation in Pori?
Yes, the university put me in contact with an accommodation agency but it was fully booked. After a few steps and several phone calls, I found accommodation by the 1st September.
Is it expensive to live in Pori?
Yes, quite...
Food is quite expensive and going out as well (especially alcohol! ).
What was learning the language like? Did you take language classes arranged by the university?
The university did organize language classes and Finnish is a very interesting language but difficult to learn.
It seemed vital to me to at least know how to say hello, thank you, goodbye and a few other courtesies.
What is the most economical way to get to Pori from your city?
From Helsinki I recommend getting Onnibus. fi.
It is a bus company with interesting rates especially if you book in advance.
What places would you recommend for going out in Pori?
My favourite place is Saikku. It is a kind of social space that the University rents out for pre-parties on Wednesday nights. It is warm and friendly, it is really a great place to meet people.
And to eat in Pori? What are your favourite places?
I didn't eat out much but Hesburger must absolutely be tried out, it is a Finnish fast food place.
And what cultural visits would you advise?
The Museum of Art with exhibitions at the very least :)
Any advice for future students in Pori?
Pori is a very pretty town.
I advise you to really see the whole country, don't limit Finland to Pori and visit Lapland, and the surrounding towns. Lots of trips are organized with the University, by students, for a good price... Enjoy!
