Experience in Papeete, French Polynesia by Nicky

What is it like to live in Papeete? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Papeete is the capital of Tahiti (and of the whole French Polynesia). But you have to know it is very very small. You can visit it in a day.
I would not really recommand to leave here, it may be a little bit dangerous by night but, if you come to study in Tahiti, it is more interesting as the transports to the University passes by there.

How much does it cost to live in Papeete?

The cost of living in Tahiti is very high.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Papeete? Is there any advice you can give?

I don't really know, but I know there are special accomodations at the University for people coming from abroad :D let me know if you want more informations I will check out for you.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

If you come to Tahiti you MUST taste "raw fish with coconut milk". It is a salad with cucombers, tomatos, carots with raw fish, coconut milk and lemon. It DELICIOUS!!
And also, you have to try all the food of the "MA'A TAHITI".

What places would you recommend visiting in Papeete?

In Papeete there are some interesting little places but personally and if you specially are a nature lover, go for little places in all over the island. I promise you, it really worth it. ;)

What advice would you give future students heading to Papeete?

My best advice is: make yourself Tahitian friends. I think it is the best way t enjoy your Erasmus trip here.
Also, there are many other islands you can visit :D
