Experience in Marmara Üniversitesi, Turkey by Ebru

Generally, what is Marmara Üniversitesi like?

Marmara University as a state university is the second old university of Turkey founded in 1883 after Istanbul University. MU consists of faculties, two and four years vocational schools and graduate schools. Generally language of education is Turkish; however, in the Faculty of Political Sciences, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Pharmacy language of education is English, and some departments like Public Administration give their education in French and German.

In addition to them, it has 9 campuses widespread in different districts of Istanbul. The main campus is located in Göztepe, Kadıköy. The most historical campus is Haydarpaşa in where Faculty of Law, Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Pharmacy is located. Rector's Office is in Sultanahmet.

What are the facilities like?

Unfortunately, there is not university dormitory. Restaurants are available for students, academic and administrative staff at affodable prices. Sports hall and main library are in Göztepe Campus. Swimming pool is Anadolu Hisarı campus. Even though there are several facilities but in different campuses. By the way, you don't need to spend your time in campus. You will be in centre in Istanbul, you can find many other opportunities.

PS: For Erasmus students, Turkish language courses are available and lots of students clubs like folk dance, choir.

What are the tutors like?

It changes from faculty to faculty, from departments to departments. I can only speak of Political Sciences' tutors. Most them have good academic background, speak well in English.

Are the lessons easy in Marmara Üniversitesi?

For Political Sciences as you all know that you have to read a lot - each week at least 50-100 pages. In addition to that there is a midterm, plus a final exam. Sometimes a term project. It's hard to say that lessons are easy.

Does the University organize activities; what are they like?

There are several activities like concerts, panels, spring fests, etc.

Do you think the teaching is of a high quality?

Not high quality maybe, but not bad...

Are there any stories you can share?

The Student Affairs and International offices are terrible.
