Experience in Montreux, Switzerland by Philip
What is it like to live in Montreux? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Very expensive even by Swiss standards, not a student city. Definitely worth a visit for an incredible view and nice weather, but not recommended as a living area.
What is the student lifestyle like in Montreux?
Not much, Lausanne (20km away) has the universities, the student, and the lifestyle. Montreux is more upper-class and touristy.
How much does it cost to live in Montreux?
A hell of a lot, forget it. Even if you find a decent-priced flatshare, which is possible, you're much better off in nearby towns of Vevey and La Tour-de-Peilz, and obviously anywhere near Lausanne.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
In summer, anywhere around the Lac Leman (lake Geneva), make sure you ask for filet de perche (great fish, usually with fries).
What places would you recommend visiting in Montreux?
In June there's the Montreux Jazz Festival which is great, and although the concerts for famous artists are expensive, there are also a lot of free outdoor concerts, by the lake, so it's worth it. Their's also a nice Christmas market. The rest of the year, just go by the lake, have a drink, it's very sunny.
Is the nightlife good in Montreux? Where is good to go?
Seriously, just fucking go to Lausanne.
What advice would you give future students heading to Montreux?
Visit, don't live there.
