What is it like to live in Montreal? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Very active city, not old yet not new, there is a feeling of history. Great for walks and small enough that an Uber when going out is reasonable. People don't all speak French, the majority of people on the street address you in English. There's a mountain in the middle and a port to explore, as well as all the other enclaves.

What is the student lifestyle like in Montreal?

The tight-knit student community, always activities and many student discounts. Students live very well, sometimes in even nicer situations than their home, due to the low cost of living and so many accommodations and activities tailored to student life.

How much does it cost to live in Montreal?

Very affordable place to live. It can be very comfortable with all-inclusive rent in any neighborhood for under $450. Pint of beer is $6-9, a bottle of wine $12, can eat out for under $15 at a decent place. $2 ramen noodle in the middle of the night on St-Laurent.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Montreal? Is there any advice you can give?

No, there's a lot of come and go and laid back people. It's possible to find nice accommodations with pleasant roommates (or pay $700 for a bachelor) at any time of year. Otherwise, leases start and end on the 1st of July.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Things to try: beaver tails (fried pastry with lots of sinfully delish toppings), poutine (especially from La Banquise), and Portuguese chicken from Romados. Can find anything in this city, decent all you can eat sushi, lots of vegan/veggie restos (you don't even notice there's no meat at Lola Rosa!), and an abundance of Irish pubs.

What places would you recommend visiting in Montreal?

Climb up the mountain, the old port, very close to nature for outdoor rock climbing/bouldering/camping, ski trips in the winter and beach/boat trips parties in the summer, concerts at Le Divan Orange. Just take a walk!

Is it good to eat out in Montreal? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Yes! La Banquise, Universel, Ramados, Lola Rosa's, L'Entrecôte, L'Express, take a walk down Crescent or up Saint-Denis street. Dollar samosa sales everywhere.

Is the nightlife good in Montreal? Where is good to go?

Everything is good, there's something going on every night of the week somewhere (yet it is still quiet at night). Saint-Laurent is the club scene.

What advice would you give future students heading to Montreal?

There are lots of exchange students in Montreal and plenty of resources available to you from the school and through Facebook. Use these! I feel that international students often have more complete friend circles and activities than the locals.
