Experience in Montevideo, Uruguay, by Alexandra
What is it like to live in Montevideo? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Montevideo is a calm city, with a beautiful boardwalk, friendly people and lots of food variety. The weather is not extreme in either summer or winter so the cold and the heat are never a big issue. There are a lot of bars to go out at night but not that many night clubs.
Montevideo is also very close to Punta del Este and Buenos Aires, which I highly recommend visiting if you are staying here.
What is the student lifestyle like in Montevideo?
The student life is ok, young people here like to go out a lot to bars, dinner and the theatre. The only thing is there are not a lot of student residences around.
How much does it cost to live in Montevideo?
Montevideo is quite expensive, but affordable if you don't eat out often.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Montevideo? Is there any advice you can give?
I think there are not that many residences around, many Erasmus students rent an apartment, i believe that would be the best option if you are coming with a group. Just make sure the apartment is in neighborhoods such as Pocitos which is near many of the universities and you can find lots of nightlife.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is one of the best things of the city. I highly recommend the asado (uruguayan barbacue), alfajores and dulce de leche. But there are also lots of other options that dont involve meat which are very good.
Is it good to eat out in Montevideo? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes, definitely. Mercado del puerto for sure. Then you have lots of restaurants in Punta Carretas and Pocitos which are good. Also in Ciudad Vieja you can find a variety of options and very good quality.
