Experience in Middlesbrough, United Kingdom by Rebecca

What is it like to live in Middlesbrough? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

It is a very small town full of people that have very often grown up there. It is not a top place for tourists as the town does not have much going on all the time.

What is the student lifestyle like in Middlesbrough?

The student lifestyle is a little bit less exciting than a bigger city. However there are plenty of student nights around the university campus.

How much does it cost to live in Middlesbrough?

For people who are dependent on public transport, Middlesbrough can be an expensive place to get about, However, there are a number of shops that have reasonable prices for food and other non-food items.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is very typically British with a variety of takeaway places such as Chinese, pizza and fish and chip shops. However Middlesbrough is not my favourite place for food. The local delicacy of this time is a dish called a 'parmo'. This consists of a chicken breast covered in a white creamy sauce and topped with breadcrumbs and cheese. Everyone who visits Middlesbrough is told to try this.

What places would you recommend visiting in Middlesbrough?

I would recommend visiting the art gallery MIMA in the centre of town to see famous works by artists such as Picasso. There are a number of parks that are nice in the summer to sit in and have a picnic with friends and family. A must see are the Eston hills and Roseberry Topping. For people who enjoy country life and walking about in nature, these are the best places to visit.

Is it good to eat out in Middlesbrough? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

There are plenty of places to eat out in Middlesbrough which cater for all types of people. Some of the best places are local restaurants that are smaller than the big chains but offer better quality food for your money. Such places include The Pied Piper in Ormesby, The wacky Warehouse in Marske and Central park right in the town centre.

Is the nightlife good in Middlesbrough? Where is good to go?

The night life is not the best in the country as a lot of clubs require a fee to enter and the drinks tend to be quite expensive.

What advice would you give future students heading to Middlesbrough?

if you are heading to Middlesbrough make sure you prepare for the cold weather you will inevitably experience. Also be aware the accent of the local people can often be difficult to understand so just ask them to speak slowly when having a conversation.
