Erasmus Experience in Metz, France, by Caroline
Why did you choose to go to Metz, France?
I wanted an english-speaking country and my university had an exchange programme with Université de Lorraine.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
Got a EU scholarship from my university. It was 1500 € in total.
What is the student lifestyle like in Metz?
Hard to tell. Some student accomodations with parties and activities but also very spread out. Many people not attending a typical "student lifestyle" exept for school.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Metz to other students?
Yes, if a student prefer a smaller city instead of a bigger one. I studied biology at the university, which not many exchange students did. Therefore that institution were a bit messy for me as an Erasmus student. At the institution of "Lettre et langues" I think they were more used to receiving Erasmus students which was better.
What is the food like?
Hard to say. It was like french food in general which I enjoy. Since it was a bit expensive to eat out, I cooked a lot myself.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Metz?
No, got free help through University de Lorraine. But it was a bit complicated.
How much does it cost to live in Metz?
It varies. The cheapest student accomodation (smallest rooms) were about 200-250 € per month.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
There are language courses available at the univeristy for all Erasmus student, which i found very good. Other than that: a bit difficult in other courses when everything is in french. I found it a bit hard being the only foregin student in a class of 40 students.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Metz from your city?
Airplane to Paris and then train to Metz.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Metz?
Not anywhere special. The local, smaller pubs and resturants were in general good. A very "chic" club was Tiffanys.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Metz?
Sorry, I don't remember the names. But there were some good crêperies I enjoyed.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The cathedral has to be seen as well as the train sation. I would also recomment the Centre Pompidou-Metz which is nice in a modern way.
La marché de Noël was also great during christmas.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Metz in the future?
I would recommend to live in the central of the city, since the bus connections to for instance Bridoux weren't so good. I think. I also reccomend to participate in the Erasmus activities organized by the univerity. It's very fun!
