Mechelen is a little city near Antwerp and Brussels. As for visiting I recommend it. For living a few months it depends if you like quiet and cozy.

What is the student lifestyle like in Mechelen?

There are a few bars near the station: Prof, Boesj, Friends, and some in the city: Tsji tsji lounge, Irish pub, Baramundo, and of course there is the Vismarkt. During the summer days it's nice drinking a cocktail there. During summer days the place is crowded.

How much does it cost to live in Mechelen?

Well as a student life can be pretty expensive in Belgium. I don't know the price concerning hiring a room. I only know if you want to hire an appartment it can be around €450 just to start in a small one.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Mechelen? Is there any advice you can give?

Ask fellow students or collegues. I know that Mechelen isn't a student-like city like Leuven, Antwerp, Gent.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Fries - Pizza - Chinese - Durum/Kebab.

What places would you recommend visiting in Mechelen?

Grote markt (Main square) - Station - Vismarkt (Fishmarket) and the city center.

Is it good to eat out in Mechelen? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

There are some good places in Mechelen. For a start I can recommand Merad, it's a Turkish restaurant where you can eat pizza or kebab. The plates are hugh. Next there is a new restaurant called Il Cardinale, where they serve amazing burgers. Definitely a place to visit!

Is the nightlife good in Mechelen? Where is good to go?

It's OK but not spectacular as Leuven, Antwerp or Gent. During the academic year a lot of student associations organize parties in the bars.

What advice would you give future students headed to Mechelen?

Enjoy the TD's if you like getting drunk cheap.
