Experience in Macau, Macau by carmen
What is it like to live in Macau? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Macau is a small city made up with three small islands (Macau peninsula, Taipa Island and Coloane Island). You will probably need 1.5-2 days to visit the major attractions. For details, please see: http://en.macautourism.gov.mo/index.php.
Transportation is not too complicated, you can travel by public buses at low cost. Furthermore, there are shuttle buses run by different hotels from the two ferry terminals and China boarder gate to the relevant hotels (most of them are free of charge). I do not advise you to take taxi if not necessary.
Macau official languages are Portuguese and Chinese.
How much does it cost to live in Macau?
Accommodation: pretty high
Food: fair
Bars: a pint of beer (MOP$70-$100)
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Macau? Is there any advice you can give?
Not really, real estate is everywhere. Some university provides dormitory for rental, I would advise you to check with the relevant university you are going which will probably make your life easier. ;)
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Portuguese food, Macanese food are my favourite. For foreign students, you may try out Canton "yam cha" where you can try some "dim sum". However, base on my experience with many of my foreign fellows, not many of them like it but at least to try it.
What places would you recommend visiting in Macau?
Ruins of St. Paul's is a must i would say.
