The best university experience
Generally, what is Lancaster University like?
Lancaster University is definitely unique in comparison to other universities in the UK, namely, because of its amazing campus setting. As soon as you drive on to the campus, you are instantly impressed by the beautiful surroundings and the community environment of the university. It is split into nine colleges, all of which have their own feel and friendly rivalry between each other. Lancaster University ticks all the right boxes; being a top 10 UK university, societies and clubs to suite everyone's needs, and generally having a fantastic social environment for students to flourish in.
What are the facilities like?
With the university being only 50 years old, Lancaster is seen as a modern university and its facilities definitely reflect this. Its sports centre is a perfect example with a fantastic design and a number of facilities, the gym being a popular option for many students. This year also, a new engineering building has been built which not only looks fantastic but proves how the university is forever improving and pushing to be the best.
What are the tutors like?
From my experience, the tutors are always helpful and encouraging to push you to the best of your ability. They make the time for you if they can see you are committed and hard-working so it is mutual respect you must build with them for the best results. At Lancaster, you have a personal tutor from your department who you meet with once a term which is very beneficial to keep track of your progress and overcome any difficulties you might be facing with certain parts of your degree.
Are the lessons easy in Lancaster University?
All students will find some aspects of their course more difficult than others, and some courses are easier than others, nonetheless, university is not easy going. You have to work for the results you want and keep on top of your studies. In exam season, it is hard work to study so much and so often but you can only do your best, and know that in the end it is all worth it.
Does the University organise activities? If so, what are they like?
The university organises activities every week. In the centre of the campus in Alexandra square, you can always see things going on as you are going to your lessons, whether that be charity events, clubs and societies promoting to new students, or people advertising social events that anyone can take part in. For example, the Student Union has regular events on including foam parties, paint parties or fancy dress themed nights-out too.
Do you think there is a good quality of teaching?
The teaching I have experienced is of a high standard which is the same across campus, reflecting its position as a top university. The tutors are there to help you so remember to ask questions and arrange meetings with them whenever you need to, as they are always happy to see students wanting to go that one step further and achieve the best results possible.
Are there any stories you can share?
Being a member of the university netball club, I have to say that for a BUCS player (the UK university sports league), Wednesdays are the best day of the week! Wednesday is game/competing day for all university sports clubs and of course, Wednesday nights are always fun when we celebrate our successes/drown our sorrows of our match results by going on a night out as a club. I would definitely recommend joining a club or society as you are doing what you love and you will also make the best of friends with people you share the same interests with. It's a win-win situation!
