An Island to visit in Brittany
Groix
It's my own little paradise on earth. groix is situated in Brittany, in the Morbihan region (just below 'Belle-ile'). To visit the island you have to take the boat from the ferry port of Lorient with the Oceane company. The crossing takes 40 minutes and costs 15 euros during the week and 17 on the weekend. The island is overflowing with beautiful sites to see. The journey around the the island takes on average 7 hours by foot. Alternatively I would recommend hiring a bike at the port.
Why visit Groix?
- To feel like you've been trasnported to the Caribbian thanks to the turquoise water of Tahiti beach (photo) or the family campsites. (You only notice the difference the moment you sip your toes in the water.. )
"Tahiti Beach"
- To see the only convex shaped beach in Europe: 'les Grands sables'.
- To wander along the beautiful little breton ports. The main port is 'Port Tudy' where the boat taxi arrives and where there is the most restaurants and bars. 'Port Lay' is the smallest port where the island's film festival takes place in August. Finally, 'Locmaria' which is on the other side of the island (there are also many restaurants on this side of the island).
Locmaria
Port Tudy
Port Lay
- To feel like you're at Earths end walking along the wilde coastline.
From 'Locamaria' to 'Pen Men', there is a coastal path to walk (very difficult to do on bike). The views are magical.
The 'Trou de l'enfer
The must-see spots on the island
- 'Le trou de l'enfer>
- The two lighthouses on either side of the islandL 'Pen men: and 'Les Chats'.
- 'Les grands sables' beach.
Where to eat?
- For crepes i would recommend "Le repos de la montée" on the way to the port, the buckwheat crepes are excellent and the staff are very friendly.
- For a dinner with meat or fish I recommend a little restaurant at 'Locmaria' "Le marsouin" where everything is freshly made and not too pricey.
Activities:
- Outings with the natural reserve.
- the 'parcabout' (ropes suspended it the trees to form a high ropes course and even a giant trampoline in the trees).
