What's the weather like in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?
Are you an Erasmus student freezing to death in your Northern country? Do you want to go outside in comfy clothing and get rid of that coat you have to wear on a daily basis? Are you wondering about the weather in the Canary islands? I have to tell you that you'd be very lucky to experience the best weather in the world. The temperature on the Gran Canaria island practically never changes during the year. It remains between 15 and 22 degrees centigrade. With the heat waves temperatures can reach almost 35 degrees centigrade, normally this occurs twice a year during the summer season and usually lasts about 4 days. Of course it gets cold every now and then, but a light coat is all you'll need. On the islands, you feel the cold in your bones, due to the geographical location, surrounded by water, thus the air is humid. On the other hand, there isn't a day where you won't see the sun in the sky, with the exception of when there are storms or some sort of bad weather. We are blessed with radiant and strong sunshine in the Canaries. My advice would be, if you come here and you have sun-sensitive skin, use sun cream to protect yourself well, or you will find your skin will look similar to that of the Pink Panther. If you've never been sunburnt before, I can tell you it's neither healthy nor comfortable.
When you're exposed to the sun on the beach, try to always bring a beach umbrella so you can have a little break from it. Make a hole in the sand and stick it in. Always carry water to stay hydrated. Normally on all the main beaches and streets there are places to eat and supermarkets.
The temperature in the north of the island is colder than the south. Agaete, Gáldar and Guía which are in the north are villages attached to the coast, whilst in the south, for instance in Mogán, Maspalomas, Arguineguín, Playa de Inglés there is better weather. If you're in the centre of the island, the altitude increases, so the temperature will drop and it will be colder. Around September-October in the centre of the island, you won't really need a coat, but between October-April, wrap up warm if you don't want to ruin your Erasmus stay.
I should also comment on the fog that happens a few times a year. This phenomenon is caused by African winds that bring sands from the deserts and cover the islands. Normally it is accompanied by heat and usually lasts 4 days. It may make you feel a bit ill, as some are more sensitive than others.
To summarise my suggestions
By the coast:
- During summer: You can wear shorts, strappy tops and flip-flops.
- During winter: Wear a coat in the higher region. The trouser length depends on how cold it is. Normally shoes are best.
In the centre of the island:
- During summer: The same as the coast, but wear a coat when the sun sets.
- During winter: Wrap up very warm, wear thermals if possible.
