Experience in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain by Nereida

What's it like to live in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria? Would you recommend it? How is it?

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a city that I'm sure millions of people from other cities would love to live in. Its climate, landscapes, the warmth of its people, and many other aspects are some of the things that I missed the most when I went to Trieste, Italy for the rest of my Erasmus year. Although it's not very big, Las Palmas is a city that has a lot of things to do: go to the beach, play sports in the open air (any day of the year), enjoy the landscapes from the top of the island, eat typical Canarian food in an innumerable amount of restaurants, go out to party almost any day of the week... Also, if there is something that stands out is the modesty of the people and the happiness they welcome foreign people with. They are very approachable, and that, when you are far from home, is much appreciated. It's a city that I would recommend a hundred times over because of all I have said so far and so much more.

What is the student lifestyle like in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?

There is a massive student presence in Las Palmas. The University of Las Palmas is always full of young students both from Gran Canaria and other places around the world. Every year loads of new Erasmus students arrive and this creates a fun variety of nationalities.

How much does it cost to live in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?

In Las Palmas the standard of living is up to you. It depends on how much you like to eat out, go out partying, go drinking with friends or go to the cinema. In general, your shopping won't be cheap, but cheaper than other foreign countries such as Italy. You can find a flat from between €300 and €500 a month for students, and generally they are very good for the price. The transport isn't very quick. There are only a few lines that go to any location on the island, and the price of the "guagua" (bus) is €1. 30. Entertainment and leisure, as a rule, isn't expensive. Eating out varies as the cost can be between €10 and €25, depending on where you go.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is spectacular. "Gofio escaldado" and the "wrinkled potatoes with mojo" are just some of my favourite dishes, accompanied by a Tropical (the typical beer in Gran Canaria).

What places would you recommend visiting in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?

You cannot miss a trip to Roque Nublo to enjoy the sunset and the views that come with it. The town of Teror, Mogán and its picturesque houses right on the beach, Maspalomas and its sand dunes, the Presa de las Niñas in Tejeda, the fishing village of San Cristobal, the older parts of the city: Vegueta, the Painted Cave in Gáldar, Agaete and how could I not mention, the capital's very own beach: Las Canteras.

Is it good to eat out in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

To dine on typical Canarian food, there is nothing better than doing so next to the seashore, on a terrace beside Las Canteras beach, in any of the magnificent restaurants that are all the way along the beach.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?

The nightlife on the island is divided between the south of the island (Playa del Inglés and Puerto Rico), and the capital (around the Port). The places that are popular in Las Palmas at the moment are Fortuni (found in the Port area), La Marea Beach Club (on the sports pier), Bravia and Kopa (both found in the Port). In the south, the place I would recommend the most is Pacha.
