Experience in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain by Marta

What's it like to live in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria? Would you recommend it? How is it?

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a place where, if you wanted to see countryside and be a bit colder compared to other parts of the island, you would go to the north in a half an hour long journey, and if you wanted some sun and the beach, it's very close by. And if you want to have fun, you can enjoy the wonderful sun all over the island. Therefore, not just for the sun, but also for the people, their customs, their festivals, their beaches... I would hugely recommend living in Gran Canaria, especially for Erasmus students who come from colder countries, they will love it.

What is the student lifestyle like in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?

The student life is great. We welcome the Erasmus students very quickly, because as Canarians we are very sociable and we love meeting new people. Also, the lecturers pay a lot of attention and participate in all the activities done in class.

How much does it cost to live in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?

It depends on which country the Erasmus student comes from. For example, if they're coming from Germany or the United Kingdom... it's going to seem like a cheap and ideal place to live; but, if they're coming from Poland or Hungary... it can seem a little bit expensive as the quality of life is better. But, there are a lot of cheap enough places on the island, where you can eat exquisite delicacies for hardly any money. And, besides, you don't need money to have a good time as you can go to the beach with friends and have a great day; you can go for a walk through the capital; you could go hiking...

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is delicious. A foreigner can't come all the way here and not try our Canarian food or experience our traditions. The Canarian dishes and delicacies are: papas arrugadas (which are salty wrinkled new potatoes with a 'mojo verde o rojo', which is a green or red sauce, and the red one is spicy), Suspiros de Moya (meringues from Moya), Clipper (a fizzy drink, strawberry or orange), Tirma chocolate bars (or different types of Tirma chocolate), gofio (Canarian flour with roasted grains, they have it for breakfast), chorizo from Teror, ropa vieja (a kind of meat soup), almond nougat, Canarian sancocho (a dish with salted fish and gofio)... The food that I like the most is: Tirma chocolate (I love it), chorizo from Teror, ropa vieja (my favourite dish), strawberry Clipper and the sancocho.

What places would you recommend visiting in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?

I would recommend visiting Roque Nublo (the summit of the island) and that you hike up there; the Pico de las Nieves (another site at the top of Gran Canaria); the beaches (Las Canteras, San Agustín, El Pirata, Playa del Inglés, Anfi del Mar, Pasito Blanco, Meloneras, Tufia, Arinaga... ); Vegueta and Triana (the old town); Teror, Santa Catalina Park...
