Experience in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain
What is it like to live in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I will live in Las Palmas only for few years; it's a really nice city but maybe it doesn't have so much to offer in the long term. I will definitely recommend it for a year, for an Erasmus because you have everything that you need, but after a while it can be boring to stay in the same place.
What is the student lifestyle like in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?
The word craziness doesn't really explain the lifestyle. The Spanish way to party is totally crazy and awesome at the same time, and doing it in Las Palmas is like having a 24/7 party in heaven. The thing is that after a while the places are all the same, people keeps going in the same bars/clubs and that can be boring after a while. The best thing is meeting someone local and start going out with them.
How much does it cost to live in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?
Life is not expensive, the drinks are cheap if you follow the promotions. There are places close to the beach which are more expensive because of tourism, but if you go to the Erasmus bar/clubs is usually cheap. The food and the drinks are normally cheap, but when they want to make a big party is not that cheap. It all depends on how much you go out. It can be expensive if you are going everywhere, to every party.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria? Is there any advice you can give?
For me it wasn't hard at all and from my experience it's better to look for a place as soon as possible. There are a lot of people who say that it's better to go on the island first, meet someone and then look for a place, but the problem is that the good places are already taken by then. My suggestion is to find a place close to the beach, close to Plaza de España, cause the nightlife is there. Even if you spend more, don't go too far from there cause otherwise you will have problems with the transportation every time you want to go out at night.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food I've eaten so far is really good and not expensive. Of course it all depends on what you like. Here you can find a lot of fish and at every hour you can eat a "bocadillo" (sandwich), which are good for hangovers...
What places would you recommend visiting in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?
In the city, Vegueta of course, which is the old town and Las Canteras, the biggest beach in there. I prefer the last part of the beach where there are palm trees and white sand. There is also a good place for surfers here, a part of the beach called la Cìcer. On Sunday is really nice to go to Confital, another beach, more calm, really nice view of the coast.
