Erasmus Experience in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain by Luisa
Why did you choose to go to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain?
It had the languages I'm studying (one of them is Chinese), and the weather is told to be perfect (truth is you don't really have much to complain about it) and because of the amazing beaches, from north to the south of the island.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I'm here for 6 months and I was given around 1000 euros.
What is the student lifestyle like in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?
For the day, I can say I ride the bicycle a lot and that the schedules usually are really flexible and they allow you to enjoy the rest of the day. At night basically sums up to Limbo, Urban and a few other clubs and bars.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to other students?
Of course!
I came here because I wanted to study in a relaxed environment, and that's exactly what I have. I study, and I go to the beach, or I go for a walk around town or have a bocadillo.
What is the food like?
The food is good, no problems in that!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?
Yes a bit, they are quite expensive and old, if you're talking about the main areas that are available (such as Mesa y Lopez).
How much does it cost to live in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?
I think with 350-400 you can live pretty well.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
No, Canarian has nothing to do with Spanish (sort of, but it's a bit different). However, everyone lives here speaking Spanish.
Yes, there are.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria from your city?
By plane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?
If you're in the Erasmus spirit, this semester we have been going to Limbo Bar, Camaleon Bar, and Urban and 3x1 club, but if you wanna get how Canarians party, you should go to Fortuni or London (more of LGBT clientele), or to the many bars you see.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?
You have Pachichi, or Avenida 74. And Ñoño for the amazing bocadillos.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
To be fair, there aren't a lot of cultural sites, it's more of a natural place.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the future?
Bring scarfs, be aware of cockroaches, try to find somewhere to live that does not face to the street since there is a bit of noise, and always go on the bus that's previous to the one you wanna go to.
