Erasmus Experience in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain by Ilias
Why did you choose to go to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain?
I thought: it is a "one in a lifetime" chance to go to Canary Islands (I'm from Greece so it's a long long way). Now I have my friends there and can go anytime I want.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
That depends on the faculty, from university of Athens, it is a five months scholarship with 400 euros per month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?
Great campus, even greater parties!
Would you recommend the city and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to other students?
I strongly recommend it to any person on earth.
What is the food like?
I loved it! There are both cheap and expensive foods there. If you 've never been to Spain before, you have to try different types of "tapas" and the Canary Islands No. 1 sauce "ali-oli".
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?
It was hard at the beginning because I didn't make a pre-search for accommodation. It cost about 200 euros per room in a house of 3-5 bedrooms. Don't live alone stay with other Erasmus students or even better with locals.
How much does it cost to live in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?
Life in Las Palmas is cheap! If you cook it's great, if you don't cook it is time to learn! Alcohol and tobacco have no taxes in Canary Islands. The youth clubs (nightlife) are 3 drinks 5 euros or 3 beers 3 euros.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The language is easy to learn. The best way is to hang out with locals. Some faculties have language courses some others don't.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria from your city?
From Athens there are only a few ways to travel to Las Palmas. You take a flight to Barcelona or Madrid and then to Las Palmas (have the same price). The cheapest way is to fly from Athens to London via Zürich and then to Las Palmas, but it is a long way journey so i don't recommend this one. I strongly recommend to spent some days to Barcelona or Madrid before you take your flight to Las Palmas.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?
The "Erasmus spots" are:
- Cameleon Cubatas Bar and 3x1. Both in Sargento Llagas peatonal.
- There are some bars in the Auditorio area.
- And, of course, small bars hidden all over the city and especially in old town "Triana and Vegueta" area.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the future?
Do a lot of surf! Go to Fuerteventura and Lanzarote for free camping! Go to Teide the volcano in Tenerife! Meet new people!
