Living in lalitpur is pretty cheap. The cost of public transport is very reasonable. The university, accomodations and shops and food courts are pretty close so you'll save a lot. In the popular areas, yes. For example, you may not get accomodations in Jhamsikhel, Patan Durbar area, Sanepa easily. However, moving a little ahead of these places, there will be enough accomodations for students. The rent in the popular areas are also expensive. But it is considerably cheaper living in Lalitpur.

Lalitpur has the best cuisine available. The authentic local cuisine is without a doubt, the best here. From cheap to fancy foods, you'll get everything here. The famous 'Mo:mo' are available here everywhere. Try visiting different restros to find out your favorite one. The street food or the stick foods are also amazing. The special Newari cuisine is a must taste here. You'll love all the food here. Also, if you look for international cuisine, just google the food and its available somewhere near anyways.
