Experience in Kilkenny, Ireland by Tara
What is it like to live in Kilkenny? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Kilkenny City is beautiful with an interesting culture. The historical sights are brilliant and the people can be friendly.
What is the student lifestyle like in Kilkenny?
The lifestyle for a student isn't that bad there are student discounts in restaurants and cafe's and pubs. There is also a student travel card that enables you to get a percentage off the price on buses and trains.
How much does it cost to live in Kilkenny?
Depends on where you want to live, but it can cost a lot. Unless you want to share accommodation with someone else, it can cost anywhere from 150-300€ if there are only two of you, so I'd suggest coming with a friend or getting shared accommodation. The food can be cheap and it's good quality.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Kilkenny? Is there any advice you can give?
It can depend on a few things like the location you want, the price you can afford to pay. But you can look at daft.ie to find a place or there are advertisements in an Irish newspaper (the Kilkenny People).
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is good and the service is also not bad. In some places they serve Spanish dishes as well but the best dishes are shepherd's pie (mince, maybe onion, mash potatoes) and paninies (bread roll with an option of fillings depending on your taste).
What places would you recommend visiting in Kilkenny?
The Kilkenny Castle, Rothe House, Black Abbey, St. Mary's Church, Kilkenny Library, the tower and the Castle Gardens.
Is it good to eat out in Kilkenny? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
There are only a few places that are good for food, have good prices and service and a nice atmosphere. These is the little Italian restaurant, Le Rivista, the Hibernian Hotel, the Pembroke Hotel, Swans Chinese Restaurant, Marble City Bar and restaurant.
Is the nightlife good in Kilkenny? Where is good to go?
The nightlife is very good, lots to do and places to go. There are many pubs and one club but they can be pricey so I'd suggest going to only a couple such as: The left Bank, An Poc Foda, Lanagons, Mat the Millers, Biddy Earlys, The Hibernian Hotel and Pegasus ( this is our only night club).
What advice would you give future students heading to Kilkenny?
The advice I would give is to get accommodation first and then work and then start your education because without money your not going or doing anything. I would also suggest you get what's called an age card because this is our version of Identity card with a photo of you with your date of birth and name. Another piece of advice is not to stay out later then 1am if possible for your safety even though there's nothing really going to happen but just to be safe.
