Vegan Travellers
As vegans, it can sometimes be a task and a half for my girlfriend and me to find a decent café/restaurant where we can simply sit down, peruse the menu, order and enjoy.
Luckily for us, we had the pleasure of living in the northern German city of Kiel, which is not only a fairly quiet and easy-going city (we're not the biggest fans of hustle and bustle!) but it also plays host to a number of food outlets where we don't have to explain to the waiter/ess that vegans don't eat chicken/tuna/cat - believe it or not, we've had this on a number of occasions - and one such place is Blattgold.
Location and Info
Blattgold is a modest-sized restaurant on the fairly busy Holtenauer Straße, and rarely (if ever) finds itself without custom. Its cosy, laid-back atmosphere is appealing to all generations, and it would never be found wanting for customer service; Vincent, the owner, and his girlfriend (below) are extremely pleasant people and manage to balance great service with friendly conversation. Already so much to praise without even mentioning the food!
Great food
Blattgold serves predominantly American-style dishes and beverages, everything being 100% vegan, and I cannot recommend enough that anyone living in or visiting Kiel, be they vegan or not, go and try one of their legendary burgers. They genuinely taste like real burgers and, as someone who loved the taste of meat but gave it up on ethical grounds, they were certainly a great discovery for me, the "chicken" burger with added "cheese" and "bacon" being my personal favourite! They also serve great drinks including a homemade lemonade to die for and various hot drinks. Not to mention the cakes! For those with a sweet tooth, Blattgold offers a wonderful selection of cakes and tortes, all of which are wheat-free.
I hope this has tempted any potential visitors to Kiel to go and give Blattgold a try! I promise you will not regret it!
