Experience in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain by Sara
What is it like to live in Jerez de la Frontera? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Jerez is a small town so it's perfect if you don't like big cities. I totally recommend it. You have all the facilities you need. Jerez is my hometown so it's beautiful to me! You also have very nice villages around you can visit and the beach is only 10 minutes by car!
What is the student lifestyle like in Jerez de la Frontera?
There are a lot of students from all places around Cádiz and a lot of Erasmus people as well. There is a library on Campus and a public library in the city center. You also have good bookshops in the city centre such as La luna nueva.
How much does it cost to live in Jerez de la Frontera?
You can find accommodation from 150 to 300€/month. Living here is not very expensive and you also have cheap supermarkets like Aldi or Lidl. If you come here you will love Mercadona (a Spanish supermarket really popular here).
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Jerez de la Frontera? Is there any advice you can give?
Sometimes it can be difficult to find accommodation. I suggest you join any Facebook group for Erasmus people and ask there. If not, you can also check on Internet for rooms in flats.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
As you already know, Spanish food is awesome! My favourite dish is puchero but I recommend tortilla, gazpacho, papas aliñadas, huevos rellenos, tortillitas de camarones, pescado de la bahía...
What places would you recommend visiting in Jerez de la Frontera?
The city center is quite good but be careful at night. You can also visit the circuit and the beaches in Cádiz!
Is it good to eat out in Jerez de la Frontera? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
We have quite good bars, where you can eat tapas and typical dishes. The most typical bar is El Gallo Azul but it's quite expensive. You can eat montaditos really cheap in 100 montaditos and eat churros in La Vega.
Is the nightlife good in Jerez de la Frontera? Where is good to go?
This is the only negative point about Jerez. We don't have a very good nightlife. We have discos and a lot of bars but they usually open from Thursday to Saturday. In Spain we usually have dinner at 9 or 10 so it's normal to go out at 12 or 1. If you go earlier to a disco it will be closed or there won't be anybody! You can go to Galeria, The Brothers, Comedia, Gorila, Damajuana, Kapote or the typical "tabancos" where you can drink the well known Vino de Jerez.
What advice would you give future students heading to Jerez de la Frontera?
Just enjoy your stay and try to meet Spanish people because you'll have a great time!
