Experience in Hobart, Australia by Nic
What is it like to live in Hobart? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Hobart is a small Australian city located in Australia's only island state - Tasmania. Tasmania actually started off as a penal colony, and hence holds some of the oldest buildings in Australia. Modern Hobart is a relaxed and slow-paced city. Many people really enjoy outdoor activities like rock-climbing, scuba-diving, and hiking. Tasmania is a largely untouched state, with over 1/3 of the landmass here listed as national park.
What is the student lifestyle like in Hobart?
Hobart is a good place to study, but potential students shouldn't come here with the expectation of a big city party scene. People are generally friendly and willing to help those who need it.
How much does it cost to live in Hobart?
Hobart is an expensive city to live in as most food + commodities need to be shipped in from the mainland. Rent is relatively cheap, but everything else isn't.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Hobart? Is there any advice you can give?
Not difficult at all - no one should have any issue with finding a place to stay.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Tasmania is probably best known for its seafood - I'd recommend the Tasmanian Salmon from Mures on the pier.
What places would you recommend visiting in Hobart?
Freycinet national park, Mt. Wellington, Cradle moutain national park, bay of fires, and the whole east coast.
Is it good to eat out in Hobart? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Expensive, but generally quite nice. Mures/Ball and chain grill are always good.
Is the nightlife good in Hobart? Where is good to go?
To be honest, not really. Hobart isn't known for its clubs - drinks out are usually pretty cheap and there are no entry fees which might make it a bit better. Don't go expecting a Melbourne quality night out.
What advice would you give future students heading to Hobart?
Embrace Hobart for what it is - I love it and I'm originally from Melbourne. Purchase a 'downie' and go exploring on the weekends, you won't regret it.
