Why did you choose to go to Hengelo, Netherlands?

I had some reasons to go to Hengelo. The first one was because it was the only place I could go. The second one: it is in The Netherlands, and because of that you can move easily through Europe.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I spent 5 months in Hengelo (From February 'til the end of June. Money depends of your country and university. I received about 1000 euros a month.

What is the student lifestyle like in Hengelo?

There is no such student life in Hengelo. It is a small town with no University, so if you want to live a student life you should go to Enschede a nearby city. We were only 8 Erasmus students, so we were a family.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Hengelo to other students?

I would recommend the Hogeschool, but not the city. The teachers are very nice and you can count with them everytime you need. If you want to learn a lot of things you can go to Edith Stein Hogeschool but spend your time in other cities when you have free time.

What is the food like?

They don't really have a lot of types food, but Kroketten and Haring is very good. You can buy Haring on the market (Wednesdays and Saturdays). The croquets are everywhere ( FEBO is everywhere).

Typical food like Stampott (I think it's written like this) is really good, but you need to find someone to cook it. :)

How did you find your accommodation?

The University found our flats. They gave us bed sheets and the things we neeed for our daily life.

What are the accommodation prices like? What are prices like for other things in general?

We payed 250 a month, plus a deposit of 200. Prices in the supermarket were OK. Not too expensive no too cheap. Tobacco and Alcohol are very expensive. Transport: bus to the center of Hengelo: 1. 20 and train to Enschede (go and return): 3. 70.

Trains are very expensive, and usually there are a lot of problems with them.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

We had a module called Language Learning or something like that. We studied English and Dutch. We had 4 or 5 lessons not more, but you learn the basics.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Hengelo from your city?

You can go from Madrid with Easyjet and KLM to Amsterdam. The you can take the direct train to Hengelo.

Another option is flying to Eindhoven with Ryanair and then take the train to Hengelo. You have to change once. Here is the webpage for the trains in The Netherlands.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Hengelo?

To dance: Merlijn, Three Musketeers, and Good Fellows, Cafe Neutje (I think that's the name).

To chill: Murphy's Law, St. Louis, and any coffee shop you find; )

Not in Hengelo but good places: Paddy's in Enschede, and Index in Germany.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Hengelo?

I always ate at home, but the cafeteria at Hogeschool is reaaally good. The "Twee Wezen" is very famous too.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

In Hengelo nothing, but you can move to Amsterdam, Den Haag, Utrecht, Groningen and Germany.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Hengelo in the future?

Move around and don't stay in Hengelo. Travel around Netherlands, Belgium and Germany and you'll enjoy your time there. :)
